Affiliation with other organizations: As Yamba Malawi’s programs and activities in Malawi have evolved over the last 14 years, we have built relationships with many organizations working in Malawi in fields including goods distribution, economic development, poverty graduation, children’s services, educational programs, community health, and orphan care. Our network in Malawi, and among global organizations working in Malawi, is robust and long-standing. Our leadership team has regular conversations with other poverty graduation practitioners and thought leaders, in order to share policy expertise and promote our mission. We also meet regularly with representatives from international development organizations in the US, Europe, and in Malawi; for example, in 2019, we met with leaders from USAID-Malawi, World Food Program, Red Cross, World Food Program, DFID, and CARE International.
Purpose of the organization: Yamba Malawi’s mission is to uplift vulnerable children by empowering communities to break the cycle of poverty. Our vision is a world where strong, self-reliant communities build brighter futures for children.
Confirmation of the activities of the organization at the regional, national or international level: Our flagship program in Malawi, the Childhoods & Livelihoods Program, is pioneering a child-focused approach to livelihoods promotion that increases the capacity of both household caregivers and of community safety net programs for children living in extreme poverty. It is a three-year program, modeled on the global poverty graduation model, based on three pillars: childhood wellbeing, entrepreneurship, and financial inclusion. By training and coaching caregivers in reducing children’s vulnerability, and empowering them to earn income and access financial services, the program provides for children’s immediate needs, while positioning caregivers to break the cycle of poverty.
