Affiliation with other organizations: AAE works within rural African communities and is currently focused on Ghana Communities. Two of such communities where our work is focused has being described below. The AAE communities are characterized by private informal sector operators engage in traditional occupations like fishing and farming within the informal economy. This comprises self-employed or wage employed persons in unregulated and unprotected jobs. Our work experience in these communities on many occasions bring to evidence the extent to which the ideology of indigenous classification can be applied. COMMUNITY ONE - PRAMPRAM Prampram is fishing community, located along the south eastern coast of Ghana. It has a population of about 15,000. The fishing industry is challenged by bad fishing practices, poor sanitation and environmental practices as well as the global climate change, and had been going through decline in fish stock. Before 1972 when there were bumper harvests, there has been fluctuation ever since. AAEs work within this community has being the setting up of a community Credit Union to promote access to credit, democracy, and skills training. COMMUNITY TWO – ADA The Ada communities surrounding the Ada Songnor Lagoon located about 3 hours drive from community one have a population of about 30,000. The lagoon and its adjoining land present the biggest prospective salt producing body of Ghana. Community members have traditionally made their living by salt winning (collecting and processing) and fishing from the diminishing Songor Lagoon, when salt water from the ocean meets water fresh from the Volta River. The history of the communities around the lagoon is a long one and contains questions of land tenancy, tribal rights, national and privatized natural resources, violent conflict, political, and an ongoing drive toward freedom and empowerment. In this community AAEs is working on providing a community library to contribute to the literacy needs of adults as well as children. High prevalence of Child Labour, Poverty, and extremely Literacy Levels In both communities, some children do not attend school because they worked to supplement their family income. Even when they attended, they dropped out before completing Primary school. Even with the introduction of the Education Sector Plan, recently, which provides for free universal primary school education, the economic cost associated with enrollment is a significant obstacle for many children’s families. Young boys between the ages of 7 – 18 continue to join their male adults on fishing expeditions. On their return, the young girls’ takeover with head pans to sell the fish on the streets. Teenage pregnancy is highly prevalent happening as early as 13 years of age.
